Tea, as a beverage, was introduced to very wealthy Europeans perhaps as early as the late 1300's, but "Tea" as a social event or light meal was introduced in 1819 when the Tea Dance became popular. The Tea Dance remained a social activity right through WWII.  Friends would gather around 5:00 and chairs and tables would be set up around a dance floor. Tea and snacks were served while couples danced.

Tea, as a social event exclusively for women is widely believed to have started with the Seventh Dutchess of Bedford in the early 1840's, . Traditionally, dinner was not served until 8:30 or 9:00, and the Dutchess would find herself a bit peckish in the middle of the afternoon. She took to ordering a light meal be brought secretly to her rooms. When she was exposed her habit captured the fancy of other equally hungry women... and the British Tea was born! While the popularity of the British "Afternoon Tea" can probably be traced back to the Tea Dances, the Dutchess may have been the first to host teas at home, and her Afternoon Teas as social events coincided with the narrowing of women's roles in the mid-1800's..
